Would you like to see one? The one we’re about to watch is pretty special because it explains how America became its own nation.

America became a country because a group of people wanted freedom from the king of England. They wanted their own country where they could live with freedom and make their own choices. Because of that, they fought in a war called the Revolutionary War. After the war, America officially became a nation on July 4, 1776.

Ask the oldest to do a math problem. Tell them to subtract 1776 from 2026. Explain that this tells us how old America will be this year on July 4th. (250)

So if the people in the Revolutionary War wanted freedom from England, what freedom do we have as Christians? (freedom to choose God’s love and share it with others)

Do you remember in Genesis when God created everything and then created Adam? God told Adam he could eat from any tree in the garden except one. When God did this, He gave Adam the opportunity to trust and obey Him or to choose his own way. God didn’t force Adam to obey Him. Sadly, Adam and Eve chose their own way instead of God’s way, and sin entered the world. Ever since then, people have struggled with sin and selfishness. But because of Jesus, we can be forgiven and learn to follow God’s ways with His help.

Explain that when America was formed, there was a document that determined how we would operate. That document is called the Constitution of the United States. It begins with a paragraph called the Preamble. It’s really fancy. Listen:

We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.
