Tell everyone who can read to bring a Bible with them, or if you’re at the table, to go get your Bible.

Ask This
Think of a time when you avoided doing something you knew was right, simply because it was easier not to do anything. (Ex: pick up a mess you made, put something back where it came from, help a friend at school who dropped something, etc.)
Say This
Sometimes it’s easier to avoid problems than to deal with them. This is because it’s hard to do the extra work or give the extra effort to do what is right.
Ask This
What’s a word we use for people who don’t do the extra work to do the right thing? (Lazy) Do you know what the Bible calls it? Sin.
Do This
Assign verses for family members to read: James 4:17, Proverbs 3:27, 1 John 3:17-18, Galatians 6:9-10. As they read their verses, discuss these points:
- James 4:17: “to not do what is right is a sin”
- Proverbs 3:27: “when you know you should do something, don’t wait”
- John 3:17-18: “love requires action…doing something”
- Galatians 6:9-10: “our good deeds will be noticed by God”
Say This
God calls us to be people who love others by taking action when people need help, not people who sit back and hope someone else will do something. This is called, “being passive.”
Ask This
Why do you think people (kids and adults) avoid taking action even when they know what’s right? How do you usually feel after you avoid something you know you should’ve done? What would change in our family if we were quicker to lovingly act instead of staying passive?
Say This
Sometimes, when we see that people need extra help and we do something while others do nothing, it’s called, “going the extra mile.” Let’s see how many “extra mile” things we can do for each other this week. And when someone does that, be sure to say, “Thank you for going the extra mile!”
Pray This
Heavenly Father, help our family recognize when people around us need help and not be passive. Help us to go the extra mile to help and love them. Show us how we can serve them best and encourage them by sharing your love with them through our words and actions.
