Watch This
Tell your family to watch closely and pick out their favorite part.
Ask This
What was your favorite part? What’s something I have done that you did not expect me to do that you think you may never forget?
Say This
[You’ll need a little prep here so you can personalize this to your family.] I LOVE being the dad of this family. I love how we…(list several positive attributes of your family. Bonus Points for items on your list that you initiate or are directly responsible for that feed the spiritual life of your family.)
Ask This
Why do you think we make those things (especially the spiritual items) important?
Say This
The main reason those things are an important part of our family is because God expects me to lead our family well and those things help us be a family who honors Him. I want us to look at a few verses in the Bible that talk about how we can be that kind of family.
Do This
Find one Bible and bring it to the table. Turn to Psalm 128. Let family members take turns reading the following verses. After each verse or section of verse, take this time to teach them to your family. Use the content provided.
Verse 1:
The word “fear” does not mean to be afraid, but to show great respect. When the dad shows God respect for His authority, he is moving in the right direction. This means the dad has to lead his family to do the same.
Ask This: What are some things we do to help us respect and honor God?
Verse 2:
The “fruit of the labor” means that I have a responsibility to provide for our family. I need to have a job in order to be paid so we can have what we need to survive.
Ask This: What are the things we need to survive?
Verse 3:
This verse tells us when the dad is (1) fearing or respecting God, and (2) providing for his family, the mom and the kids are showing up at their best. The support from the dad helps mom and the kids shine!
Ask This: How have you seen me help mom recently? How have I helped any of the children recently?
Verses 4-6:
God will bless the dad who does these things for a long time and he will grow old and be blessed with grandchildren.
Ask This: What do you think the grandchildren should call me?
Say This
Imagine the family where the dad does these things. What are they doing? What are they not doing?
Ask This
I want us to be this kind of family! We have to work at it together. What’s one thing we can work on right now to help us get better at being this kind of family?
Pray This
"Lord, thank You for our family! We are blessed to have you as the ultimate authority who helps us grow stronger each day as we seek to be a family that reflects your love and power. Please help me to lead this family well. Help me to follow you and they follow my leadership. May I make you and them proud in the days ahead.”
