Do This
Before you begin, think of one recent moment where you felt proud of yourself (success, win, achievement) and be ready to share it honestly with your family.
Say This
Tonight we’re going to talk about something every person on earth has to deal with…watch this clip and see if you can guess what it is.

Any guesses??? (Pride). Sometimes pride shows up when we think too highly of ourselves, like when we want to win, be the best, or make everything about us. When was a time when you felt proud of something? (Let them share)
Ask This
True or False: Pride can also show up the opposite way, when we think too little of ourselves and get stuck in shame or feeling like we’re not good enough. (Let them answer)
Say This
The answer is “True.” Any guess why the second way is also a form of pride? (Like the first way, the focus is only on ourselves.) God calls us to something better that will actually help us keep pride away. He calls us to serve humbly.

Read Phillipians 2:3 from your Bible (not your phone…let your kids see you holding God’s Word…)
Say This
One way I know pride is creeping into my life is when I start saying ‘I’ a lot…what ‘I’ did, what ‘I’ accomplished, what ‘I’ deserve, ‘I’m’ not good enough.
Do This
Give everyone a napkin and a marker. Ask them to write the word “Pride” and ask: “What’s smack in the middle of the word, “Pride”? (‘I’)
Ask This
How can we fight against pride? (Listen for responses)
Say This
The way we fight against any form of pride is by getting outside of ourselves… and serving others with humility. Pride turns us inward. Humility sends us outward.
Ask This
Let’s make a list of how we can serve in the next three days. First, how can we serve each other? Next, how can we serve others at school or work? Third, how can we love our neighbors (literally)?
Say This
This week, let’s each choose one way to serve someone, and not make it about us. If we’re not careful, we can fall into a trap of serving ourselves by serving others because it makes us feel good about ourselves. Is that right? NO! And we’re not going to post it, brag about it, or look for credit. We’re just going to do it… because that’s what humble people do.
Pray This
God, thank You for the gifts You’ve given us. Help us not to become prideful or discouraged, but to stay humble. Teach us to serve others the way Jesus did. Help our family to think of others more than ourselves. In Jesus’ name, amen.
