Say This:
Have you ever walked through a spider web you didn’t see coming? You stop, swat your hands, and try to get it off. No matter what you do, it sticks. That’s the way sin works. At first, it can seem small or even invisible. But once it wraps itself around our hearts and minds, we realize we’re caught in something much bigger than we expected.
Try This:
Have your family stand in a circle. Start by holding the end of the yarn, saying one small thing that someone might do wrong (Telling a lie). Next, toss the yarn to someone else across the circle while holding onto the end. Have that person say another sin (Disobeying parents), and toss it to someone else. Keep naming examples and passing the yarn until a web is formed (Each person may need to go more than once).
Say This:
Now, try to move without letting go of the string. It’s pretty difficult if not impossible. Just like this web, sin can entangle us and make it hard to live freely. Even small sins will eventually entangle us. Let’s take a look at what the Bible says about sin—what it is, how it starts, and why it’s so dangerous. Most importantly, we’re going to discover the good news: that we don’t have to stay tangled. There’s a way out, and His name is Jesus.
1: Sin Is Rebellion Against God
Read Romans 3:23 - “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”
Say This: A simple definition of sin is anything we do, say, or think that displeases God. Sin isn’t just breaking a rule — it’s falling short of God's perfect standard. It's choosing our way instead of God's way. This started in the Garden of Eden when Adam and Eve broke the one rule God had given them, and ate the forbidden fruit. Sin is like aiming for a target and missing. Whether you miss only by an inch or by a mile, you still miss the mark. That’s what sin is — it is missing God's mark.
2: Sin Has Serious Consequences
(When Simba’s guilt causes him to run away)
Say This:
In this scene, Simba’s apparent mistake and shame drove him into hiding. Just like Simba, we often run from our sin instead of facing it. Our sin pulls us away from God, from other relationships, and even from ourselves. But just like Simba, we are called to return to what is right.
“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” - Romans 3:23
Say This:
Sin doesn’t just disappoint God. Sin brings spiritual death. That means separation from God. There is good news, however: God offers us a gift to rescue us from our sin. That gift is Jesus.
3: Sin Grows If We Don’t Deal With It
“But each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.” - James 1:14–15
Say This:
Sin starts small with a bad thought or selfish action. If not dealt with, it will grow. Just like a seed becomes a tree, sin can grow and take over our lives. Imagine planting a weed in a garden. If you don’t pull it up right away, it takes over and kills everything good. Sin works the same way.
4: Jesus Came to Save Us from Sin
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” - 1 John 1:9
Say This:
Sin is more than just bad behavior—it’s a deep heart problem, a rebellion against the holy God who made us. It separates us from Him and brings spiritual death. But God is not waiting to crush us for our sin — He’s waiting to forgive us.
God, in His mercy, didn’t leave us trapped in our sin. From the very beginning, He had a rescue plan. Jesus Christ, the sinless Son of God, came into our broken world, lived the perfect life we couldn’t, and died the death we deserved. On the cross, He took the full punishment for our sin. Then He rose again, proving His power over sin and death forever. When we confess our sins, trust in Him, and turn away from the path of sin, we are not only forgiven—we are made new. In Christ, the tangled web is broken, and we are set free to walk in truth, light, and relationship with God.
Ask This:
- What are some sins that seem "small" but can grow into big problems?
- How do you feel when you've done something wrong — and what do you usually do about it?
- What are some ways we can avoid temptation before sin even starts to grow?
- Why is it sometimes hard to believe God will forgive us? What helps you remember His love?
- How can we encourage each other in our family to live in a way that pleases God?
Pray This:
“Lord, thank You for showing us the truth about sin — and even more, for sending Jesus to forgive us and free us. Help our family to recognize sin, turn from it, and live in a way that honors You. Keep us close to You and help us encourage each other to stay on the right path. Amen.”
